The answer turned a simple interview question into a wider debate about the future of human value.

When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was asked who the smartest person he’s ever met was, most people expected a predictable answer. A Silicon Valley rival or a Nobel Prize winner, perhaps, but instead, Huang’s response was anything but predictable. It sparked conversation online, and his answer stands to reframe what “smart” means, shifting the focus from status to something more personal.

Who is Jensen Hung

Jensen Hung is the CEO of Nvidia, owns 3% of the company, and has a personal net worth of over $160 billion. He founded the company in 1993, and since then, Fortune magazine has named him one of the world’s best CEOs for his innovation and leadership. He is considered a member of the 100 most influential people.

What happened

In a recent interview on the “A Bit Personal Podcast” with Jodi Shelton, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was asked a one-sentence question: “Who is the smartest person you’ve ever met?”

His response was, “I can’t answer that question, and I know what people are thinking.” He went on to say that “the definition of smart is someone who solves problems, technical. But I find that’s a commodity, and we’re about to prove that Artificial Intelligence is able to handle that part easiest.”

He paused briefly, then launched into another example of what he meant. “Everyone thought that software programming was the ultimate smart profession. Look what is the first thing that AI is solving. Software programming. And so it turns out that the definition of smart is very different than what most people think.”

The reactions

The video sparked thousands of interactions and hundreds of comments. Some people agreed with his response, while others felt that it dodged the question.

One person wrote, “Smart is evolving with time.” Someone else in the thread responded with, “This is a very smart answer to make everyone sound like they have a chance of being smartest person.”

Others were skeptical, with one comment posted saying, “The definition of Smart remains the same, human intelligence is being replaced, that’s all.” Others thought that the answer missed the mark completely. “Emotional intelligence is king. AI or awful intelligence is very limited.”

Some heard his answer and grounded it even more by saying, “A smart person is the one who can enjoy life to the maximum with what he or she has.” The internet wouldn’t be the internet without a bit of humor. “Bro knows he’s the smartest person he’s ever met,” while another comment said, “He wanted to say ‘myself’ so bad.”

Why this matters

Huang’s answer is that the future definition of intelligence won’t be as black-and-white as who knows the most facts or writes the best code, because the dynamics of our world are changing.

As artificial intelligence is able to do more and more technical tasks, traditional markers of intelligence are no longer relevant. Huang’s answer suggests that the shift towards intelligence will now be at people who can reason and make decisions when there is uncertainty and no clear answer.

Problem-solving alone is no longer the biggest indicator of intelligence, given that AI can perform the same technical tasks. The takeaway from his responses is subtle but significant. The competitive edge will no longer come from being the smartest in the traditional sense, but from being the most adaptable and able to see beyond what machines can do.

Huang’s answer is more than just a philosophical answer. It raises a valid discussion point about what intelligence means in a world where AI is quickly rewriting the rules.
