After multiple skin cancer scares, Hugh Jackman gets real about aging, prevention, and why he’s steering clear of cosmetic touches.

Despite his status as a Hollywood star, Hugh Jackman has remained notably grounded and approachable in his public image. In a recent interview, the actor spoke candidly about his experience with multiple skin cancer diagnoses, offering a clear and measured perspective on his health. He also addressed the broader realities of aging in the public eye, including his views on cosmetic procedures. The discussion reflects a direct, self-aware approach to topics often treated more cautiously within the industry.

The story

Hugh Jackman has managed to stay consistently relevant and widely liked. The Australian-born star first became a household name as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, a role that defined his career for nearly two decades. But beyond the superhero world, he’s built a reputation as a versatile performer, moving easily between action films, musicals, and even Broadway, and there are no signs of slowing down anytime soon. He has several projects on the horizon, including The Death of Robin Hood, where he takes on a darker, more seasoned version of the legendary outlaw, and another project, a more offbeat mystery-comedy, The Sheep Detectives.

Off-screen, Jackman has also been navigating major life changes. In 2023, he and his wife of more than 25 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, announced their separation, a development that surprised fans who had long seen the pair as one of Hollywood’s more grounded couples. Since then, Jackman has kept a relatively low profile personally while continuing to work steadily, recently returning to high-profile projects and media appearances.

Jackman’s journey with skin cancer

During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Jackman opened up about his journey with skin cancer. He revealed that he’s had “about six” occurrences, all of them basal cell carcinoma, the most common and least dangerous form, but still something that requires regular treatment. For Jackman, it’s become less about fear and more about vigilance. Doctors have told him to expect more occurrences over time, especially as his immune system weakens with age.

Growing up in Australia, where sun exposure is intense and tanning culture was once the norm, Jackman admits he didn’t always take precautions seriously. Now, that’s changed completely. He emphasized the importance of regular skin checks every three to six months and consistent sun protection. “Everyone should get a check,” he noted, calling skin cancer one of the most preventable forms of cancer if caught early.

Howard Stern had his own comments to add from having spots removed to undergoing preventative procedures that involve creams and ultraviolet light. At one point, he compared the aftermath to having his skin repeatedly “burned off,” even quipping that his leg now looks “like a giraffe” from the marks. Humor aside, this is something he’ll be managing for life and he’s urging others not to wait until it becomes a recurring issue.

His views on plastic surgery

The conversation moved to a topic of cosmetic procedures, one that Jackman is surely familiar with, being in Hollywood. But he didn’t hesitate to make his stance clear. In fact, he seemed almost amused by the idea, questioning what it would actually do for him at this stage of his life and career.

Rather than chasing a more youthful appearance, Jackman appears comfortable with the idea of aging naturally and never getting plastic surgery. He even downplayed his own looks, jokingly rating himself as a “solid seven,” and made it clear he doesn’t see himself through the same lens as the public might. His candid take on aging and self-image adds another layer to his ongoing reflections on life in the spotlight and being the Sexiest Man Alive.

Why this matters

On one hand, Jackman’s experience is a reminder that something as routine as sun exposure can have long-term consequences and that prevention and early detection really do make a difference. On the other hand, his attitude toward aging offers a counterpoint to the usual Hollywood narrative. Instead of chasing perfection, he’s leaning into longevity in terms of his health and his career. It’s becoming more common to see men in Hollywood not afraid to be themselves, even if it means confirming they are a pathological liar.

There’s also something undeniably relatable in the way he talks about it like a regular person and not some unreachable star. He conducts himself as just someone who’s learned a few things the hard way and is willing to share them. For fans, it’s a glimpse behind the polished image. For everyone else, it’s a pretty solid reminder to wear the sunscreen, book the checkup, and maybe don’t stress so much about the rest.
