Between divorce, cancer diagnosis, and years in the spotlight, Jackman finally said what he thought about being called the world’s most attractive man.

Each year, People magazine chooses a man to feature on its cover, calling him the “Sexiest Man Alive.” The title is given mainly based on how attractive the man is, and while many see it as a great honor, not everyone agrees that it’s something to be celebrated. Hugh Jackman was named the Sexiest Man Alive in 2008. He accepted the recognition with grace, but now, many years later, he shared his thoughts in an interview with Howard Stern about what it really meant to him.

By 2008, Hugh Jackman had become a famous name in Hollywood. His role as Wolverine made him one of the world’s most recognizable stars, and he played the character for nearly two decades across ten films, including the most recent Deadpool & Wolverine. Besides his superhero fame, he starred in acclaimed movies like The Prestige, Australia, and Les Misérables. He also received several awards, including the Tony Award, the Golden Globe Award, and the MTV Movie Award.

However, his life hasn’t been without challenges. He has been diagnosed multiple times with skin cancer, specifically a type called basal cell carcinoma. Instead of hiding his struggles, he has been open about them, using his platform to encourage people to wear sunscreen and get checked for skin issues early. His honesty has had a noticeable impact, inspiring many to take their health more seriously.

Then, in 2023, Jackman’s marriage to Deborra-Lee Furness ended after 27 years, surprising many fans who saw them as a symbol of lasting love in Hollywood. Shortly after this, Jackman was linked to actress Sutton Foster, bringing even more attention to a challenging time in his life. Despite these ups and downs, he has kept working hard and stayed focused without engaging in public drama.

Jackman is also preparing for his upcoming projects, including a film called “The Sheep Detectives” and a thriller titled “The Death of Robin Hood,” which is based on an adaptation of the 17th-century ballad Robin Hood’s Death.

The Howard Stern interview

In an interview with Howard Stern, Hugh Jackman opened up about what it’s like to be considered one of the most attractive men. He shared a story that gave a different perspective on the title of “Sexiest Man Alive.” When he was younger, Jackman had a close friend, Mike, who was a model. As he describes, whenever they walked down the street together, Hugh felt invisible and as if no one noticed him. That was his reality long before he became famous.

So when People magazine named him “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2008, he was quite reflective about it. Jackman told Stern, “Thank God I became famous when I was 30,” because by then he already had enough life behind him to know the title wasn’t literally true. “I know it’s not even true in my group of friends. I’m not the sexiest”, he added.

Stern asked, wondering if the younger Jackman had trouble attracting women. Jackman was honest, saying he did okay, but he didn’t have the kind of looks that turned heads as Brad Pitt did. He was aware of that even back then.

Jackman also talked about growing up in a religious environment, which shaped his views more than many people realize, especially when they think of him as Wolverine. He regularly went to church, and it always kept him grounded. Even as he grew a bit more relaxed about it over time, his values remained with him, shaping how he saw himself before he became famous.

Why this matters

Whether to give people titles or labels based on their physical appearance is a subjective matter with varying social, ethical, and psychological perspectives. While we often see such labels in stories and movies to help define characters, using them in real life can lead to harmful objectification of men as well as women. When society reduces people to a specific set of physical traits, such as height or a look, it overlooks their experiences and personalities. This narrow view can pressure them to conform to a limited standard of what is seen as “desirable” or “successful.”

Many people already struggle with how they see their bodies and their self-worth, especially when they feel they can’t meet a standard that even those labeled may not agree with. When we recognize that these labels often do not accurately reflect who someone is, we can build a more compassionate and understanding society where men and women are seen for who they really are, rather than just for their appearance.
