The YouTube giant hints at a project bigger than anything he has done before.

Jimmy Donaldson didn’t become the most-followed person on the internet by playing it safe or by following the old rules of TV. With a massive YouTube following of 469 million subscribers, he has spent the last 10 years experimenting with wild and creative ideas.

In 2024, he moved into traditional television by partnering with Amazon and MGM Studios for a show called Beast Games, which just finished its second season. This competition features 1,000 people competing for a $5 million prize, the biggest payout in the history of TV and streaming. He’s famous for his charity work, including initiatives like Team Trees, Team Seas, and Team Water. On The Kelly Clarkson Show, Mr.Beast told her that his channel “didn’t grow for eight years.” He spent nearly a decade making content that almost nobody watched before he finally found a way to get people’s attention. His first big break came from a video in which he simply counted to 100,000, which took him 40 hours. He joked that he “hacked a way to make money while watching TV,” using those mundane tasks to build a following that now includes over 400 million people.

A young fan asked him if there was a video he wanted to make but had not done yet. Jimmy revealed that one project is currently being developed, and it involves going into outer space.

“I want to grab a hundred astronauts, have them compete in like, you know, space-like challenges and things like that,” he said. This would involve a long competition where people stay in a place that looks and feels like the International Space Station. He mentioned the contestants would be “living in a mock version of the ISS for a week” to find out who is the best fit for the prize. Instead of just giving away money, he stated, “The winner of it all, we send to space.”

To make this happen, he needs help from companies that own rockets. He used the interview to reach out to leaders in that industry, saying, “So, Blue Origin, SpaceX, if you want to help me out.” The host noted that a video like this would get more people excited about exploring the stars. Jimmy agreed, but he kept his sense of humor about the stakes of the game. When the host suggested that everyone wins because of the inspiration, he joked, “Well, everyone minus the 99 astronauts that lost wins.”

It is interesting to look at where he started compared to where he is now. He did not spend weeks coming up with a perfect brand name. He got the name MrBeast from a random name generator on Xbox Live. He liked it and kept it when he started his channel at 13 years old. He was just a kid in his bedroom, but now he has enough influence to ask rocket companies for a partnership to send a fan into orbit.
