In an interview, the singer explains how cutting back on drinking and building a fitness routine reshaped his life, touring stamina, and priorities as a father.

The image of Ed Sheeran that most of us have in our heads is the guy in a baggy flannel shirt, casually playing a guitar. But lately, he has been making headlines for a very different reason. In an interview with Men’s Health, Sheeran opened up about his body transformation, losing about 30 pounds and completely changing how he lives. At 34, Sheeran is not only concluding the record-breaking Mathematics era but is also physically and mentally rewriting his narrative.

By stepping away from the fun but chaotic lifestyle of his twenties, filled with late-night parties, drinks, and fast food, he has become more focused and clear-minded as he begins a new and exciting phase in his creative journey.

The story

Ed shared that he has achieved his weight loss goal through five years of sustainable lifestyle changes and admits that his twenties were defined by a cycle of unhealthy behaviors common in the high-pressure music industry.

The hectic tour schedules, heavy alcohol consumption, and poor nutrition led to low self-esteem. “I always felt like s–t within myself – I’d wake up and look in the mirror and just feel gross,” Sheeran admitted, noting that his professional success rarely reflected his personal well-being.

The main reason for this change was becoming a father. Sheeran remembers a significant moment when his daughter, Lyra, was only two weeks old.

After sharing a bottle of wine with a friend, he struggled to respond to her waking up during the night while suffering from a heavy hangover. “I woke up, and I was like, ‘I probably shouldn’t drink if I’m going to feel this dreadful.’ I want to be able to do the night stuff,” he explained. This realization sparked in him a desire to be a responsible parent as well as a performer who felt “superhuman” on stage.

Ed explained that the transformation didn’t happen overnight. He had gone through extensive weight training, running, and reformer pilates. This transformation was clearly visible during his massive Mathematics tour, which began in Dublin, Ireland, in 2022 and concluded in Düsseldorf, Germany, on September 7, 2025.

Regarding his fitness choices, Sheeran noted, “Reformer is definitely tied into touring. After the show, the last thing I want to do today is bench press and deadlift.” This approach provides a gentle way for him to stay active while also stretching. As a result, he improved his physical fitness and was able to walk on a treadmill for more than two hours each night without losing his vocal quality or stamina.

This discipline serves as a driving force behind Ed Sheeran’s latest album titled “Play”. Unlike his earlier songs, which often had somber, reflective themes, this new collection is filled with clarity and vibrant energy. Sheeran has shared that his outlook on life has changed, saying, “I’m not saying I’m done with enjoying myself, I still drink. I love red wine, I love a nice meal, but it’s not every day.”

His transformation story shows how making intentional lifestyle changes can significantly improve your ability to handle life’s challenges and extend your career in the competitive music world. By practicing moderation and prioritizing his health, Sheeran not only refreshes his creativity but also serves as a positive role model for others on finding balance in life.

The changes in Ed Sheeran’s life show how views on celebrity health are evolving. It is becoming increasingly common for high-profile figures to serve as examples of cutting back on heavy drinking and avoiding burnout.

In the past, many celebrities were known for their wild partying and extravagant lifestyles. However, today, we see more of them opening up about past alcohol usage and choose soberity. This transparency helps people understand that maintaining a healthy, fit body isn’t just about luck or genetics, but about hard work and making consistent, healthy choices.

This movement is mirrored by significant changes in society as a whole. Many people, especially younger people, are becoming “Sober Curious,” which means they’re thinking more carefully about their drinking habits. A recent study revealed that 61% experienced a decreased interest in consuming alcohol. This trend is especially noticeable among Gen Z, who are drinking much less than earlier generations did at the same age. The main reason for this shift is a desire to improve their health.

By speaking openly about his experience, Ed Sheeran presents a view of self-care that focuses on balance rather than restriction. He frames moderation and staying active as practical choices that support performance at work and responsibilities at home, not as a rejection of enjoyment. This perspective is increasingly reflected beyond celebrity culture, as more people adopt similar habits to manage daily pressures with greater consistency and resilience.
