The star shares how professional guidance and strict routines helped him meet a demanding physical standard for his new film.

Matt Damon recently spoke openly about the physical changes he went through for his latest movie role, after photos showing him during filming. He discussed his body transformation in a recent episode of New Heights Podcast, hosted by brothers Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce on January 7. Damon opened up about the strict routine he followed and the diet changes he made to prepare for his role.

His new movie, The Odyssey, will arrive in movie theaters in July 2026. Besides Matt Damon, the film stars Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

What happened

Jason Kelce asked Damon whether he was playing Odysseus in his new film. Damon answered, “I’m Odysseus.” Jason then brought up the photos that had been circulating online and said, “I think I’ve seen the pictures. You were getting pretty yoked up in some of the pictures I saw”. Damon responded, “Yeah, I was in really good shape. I lost a lot of weight,” he said.

He explained that the director had a specific request for him that best suited his role, “He wanted me like lean but strong,” he added. He then shared how far that pushed him from his usual weight, not only through training but also through diet. “Literally like stopped eating just because of this other thing I did with my doctor. Stopped eating gluten,” Damon shared.

He further added, “I used to walk around at between 185 and 200. And I did that whole movie at 167.” Damon mentioned that he had not been this light since high school.

He also shared the diet changes he made to achieve the look. He explained that this decision was made after discussing things with his doctor. Along with his workout routine, this change had a bigger impact on his weight than he had anticipated. “It was a lot of training and a really strict diet,” he added.

Travis Kelce then asked how Damon approaches roles that require that kind of conditioning, specifically whether he brings in a new trainer. Damon explained that he already works with someone, but that the process depends more on having a defined target. “It’s just having kind of a clear goal and setting it,” he said.

Damon compared the experience to preparing for a sports season. He explained that once you start training, you get used to it and it becomes a habit. “You get really routinized about it.”

When Travis later asked whether he had gone back to eating gluten, Damon replied, “I haven’t. I’m staying strong. I’m done. I’m gluten-free everything.” He joked that he got so used to it that he even found a gluten-free beer to maintain his diet routine.

Why this matters

Damon, who is 55, took serious actions and showed discipline to prepare for his role, worked closely with trainers and followed strict workout and meal plans.

His workout plan is tough and designed to help him achieve a certain look in a short time, but it is not sustainable over the long term. As we could see in the interview, even though he is no longer eating gluten, he is most likely not in the same shape as in the movie. For most men, keeping up with that kind of fitness can be quite challenging, even with professional guidance, and it’s often unrealistic without help.

Discipline in fitness looks different for everyone. What might work for a star like Damon to get a specific look quickly isn’t always practical for you, especially when you cross 50. Instead, focusing on regular, balanced meals and staying active a few times a week tends to be a more sustainable approach. Damon’s journey shows that discipline isn’t just about pushing yourself to the limit, but it’s about finding a routine that fits your personal needs and that you can maintain for a longer period.

Conclusion

Damon’s insights show the intense physical training actors undergo during filming, which is different from their regular routines after production ends. While it’s normal to be inspired by his image and how he maintains it, it’s not always sustainable.

To achieve a specific look or personal goal, it’s essential to listen to your own body and understand what works best for you. Instead of trying to imitate a celebrity who follows a challenging workout routine, it’s better to focus on what you can realistically do to reach your own fitness goals.
