Back at the house, he ran through every gear and parked on a slight incline. The car sat there for over an hour without rolling, and everything looked fine. But the car belonged to his girlfriend, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that damage might be hiding somewhere he couldn’t see. So he posted the full story to Reddit and waited.

One experienced commenter explained what had actually happened. What the driver heard was the parking pawl, a small steel pin inside the transmission that locks the output shaft when the car is in park. At 50 mph, the pawl can’t drop into the slots on the shaft fast enough to catch, so it skips and grinds until the car slows enough for it to engage cleanly. That’s the clattering. The commenter noted that parking pawls are thin pieces of steel and can shear off under the right conditions, which would mean a full transmission teardown. The incline test was a good sign. By the sound of it, the driver had gotten lucky.

Someone offered a way to confirm the pawl was still intact. Chock the rear wheels with something solid, a brick or a block of wood placed about a foot behind the tire, then gently push the front of the car. A healthy pawl lets the vehicle rock roughly three to six inches before stopping. If it rolls freely past that point, the pawl is compromised. This is actually a very clever and easy check everyone can do at home.

Modern vehicles use electronic shifters, meaning there is no physical cable linking the shifter lever directly to the transmission. They also have speed-based lockouts built into their software, meaning you can only shift gears at a certain speed. When the car is moving above a certain threshold, and the driver selects park, the system either ignores the input entirely or drops the car into neutral and holds it there until the vehicle slows to near stop, usually between 5 and 10 mph. The parking pawl itself is a relatively simple mechanism. It’s designed to hold a stationary vehicle on a slope, not to absorb a high-speed engagement.
