My Best Best Airport Tricks, As a Frequent Flyer
I spend way too much time in the airport. I travel frequently for work and also enjoy traveling for pleasure, exploring every corner of the world. All of this traveling means that I very often find myself in airports, which are not always the friendliest places. However, I have some useful airport tricks that can make your airport experience a lot easier. Take a look at these little pieces of advice, and hopefully, they will make your airport experiences a whole lot better!
Reach Early
Arriving at the airport early can significantly enhance your travel experience. Instead of arriving two hours early, I always get to the airport 3 hours before my international flight. Not only does it give you plenty of time to complete check-in formalities, but it also allows for unexpected delays without the stress. This extra time means no frantic rushing, making the start of your journey more relaxed and enjoyable. So, give yourself the gift of time and start your trip positively.
Carry an Empty Water Bottle

Only a few people know it, but this trick is a game-changer, saving you money. While I cannot carry water past security, I can always take an empty one. Once I pass security, I can fill my water bottle at a fountain, saving money and reducing plastic waste. For me, staying hydrated, especially on long flights, is crucial, and luckily, nowadays, most airports have convenient water bottle filling stations. This simple trick ensures I stay comfortable and refreshed throughout my journey. It’s also an eco-friendly choice.
Prefer Check-In Line Closest to Business Class
I choose the check-in line adjacent to the business class line for a quicker experience. These lines typically move faster because they’re designed for efficiency. Even if I’m not flying business class (and I assume most of us don’t), this little hack can help me breeze through the process. If you want to try this, simply look for signs indicating business travel and join the neighboring line. You’ll often find that service is quicker and the wait is shorter. It’s a minor adjustment that can start your trip on the right foot.
Wear Layers
My best advice for clothing is layering. Airports and airplanes can be unexpectedly hot or cold, and anyone who has traveled a few times has likely experienced this. You can easily adjust by wearing layers to stay comfortable no matter the temperature. I usually start with a light shirt, adding a sweater or jacket, and pack a scarf for warmth. If you’re not on a strict business trip, I suggest bringing your favorite hoodie. This can be a game-changer on a long flight. This approach also saves space in my luggage. Wearing my bulkier items means more room for other essentials in my bag.
Use Credit Cards for Airport Lounge Access

Some credit cards offer complimentary lounge access, which can significantly enhance your travel experience. These lounges provide a quiet, comfortable, relaxing space, often with complimentary snacks and drinks. Escaping the busy terminal can make layovers more pleasant. Many premium credit cards offer this perk and other travel benefits like priority boarding. Research and select a card that best suits your travel needs. Lounge access can make those long layovers much more bearable.
Skip Wearing a Belt or Jewellery
When it comes to belts and heavy jewellery, try to leave them behind or in your luggage. This little trick can speed up your journey through airport security. These items often trigger metal detectors, leading to delays and extra screening. Choose comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing and minimal accessories on travel days. Opt for slip-on shoes and clothes without metal components. If you must wear a belt, pack it in your carry-on and put it on after passing security. This simple change can save you valuable time and reduce hassle.
Mark Your Bags

I always mark my bags, and I recommend that you do the same. Making your bags easily identifiable can prevent mix-ups and save time at baggage claim. I use colorful tags, ribbons, or unique stickers to make my luggage stand out. I don´t want to wander around the luggage belt inspecting 10 almost identical bags. This reduces the risk of someone else taking your bag by mistake. Also, add your contact information inside and outside your luggage. In case your bag is misplaced, it will be easy to identify. Distinctive luggage is also less likely to be stolen.
Take a Multi-Plug Adapter
A multi-plug adapter is my must-have gadget for any journey, especially on international trips. It allows me to charge multiple devices simultaneously, regardless of the local plug type. Airports often have limited power outlets. My advice is to look for a compact, lightweight adapter that fits various plug types. It’s a lifesaver during long layovers or delays. Staying connected and charged makes your travel experience smoother and more enjoyable.
Be Smart for Security Checks
Having an intelligent strategy for security checks can save you time and stress. Prepare by having your ID and boarding pass ready, and be aware of the rules regarding liquids and electronics. Keep items like laptops and toiletries easily accessible in your carry-on. Wear shoes that are easy to remove and avoid wearing metal accessories. Follow security personnel instructions and stay aware of your belongings. A little preparation goes a long way in making security checks quick and efficient.
Politely Ask for a Free Upgrade
I could write a whole book about how to ask for an upgrade, but as a starting point, politely asking for a flight upgrade can sometimes work in your favor. It worked a few times for me, but to be honest, it’s less common than you think. First, dress neatly, arrive early, and ask at the check-in desk or gate. Try to dress to a level where you would like to upgrade to. Airlines occasionally have open business or first-class seats they are willing to fill. Frequent flyers or loyalty program members often have better chances, but it’s worth a try for anyone. Even if you don’t get an upgrade, being courteous and friendly can enhance your overall experience.
Use Ziploc Bags

Packing extra Ziploc bags is incredibly useful for travel. They’re great for storing snacks, protecting electronics from moisture, and organizing small items. Use them to contain toiletries and prevent spills in your luggage. They’re also handy for dirty clothes. Ziplock bags are lightweight and occupy minimal space, yet offer versatile solutions to common travel issues. Having a few on hand can help you stay organized and prepared.
Keep Your Immigration Documents Handy
Keep your immigration documents easily accessible when traveling internationally. Store your passport, visa, and necessary paperwork in a dedicated travel wallet or pouch. This way, you can quickly present them without rummaging through your bags. Being organized with your documents reduces stress and prevents delays at customs and immigration. I always make copies of essential documents for emergencies. This simple practice streamlines my travel experience and provides peace of mind.
Parking Pictures
If I choose to drive to the airport and park my car, I always make sure to snap a photo of my parking spot. Having photo proof of where my car is parked will help me find it after a long return trip. My experience is that I am often frazzled when we arrive at the airport and in too much of a rush to remember where we parked. And, when I return after a long trip, I am likely to be tired, which makes it difficult to distinguish my parking lot from the others that are similar in appearance. Take a picture of your car and its surroundings to make this whole process a little easier.
Grab a Neck Pillow
I admit that I always feel a little crazy walking around the airport wearing a neck pillow, but trust me when I say that you will appreciate it once you board the plane. I often try to take a quick nap or just close my eyes and relax on the flight. But airplane seats are very uncomfortable, and you seriously need a pillow. Bring a neck pillow that you can simply wear as you walk through the airport rather than carrying something larger. Then, when you are on the plane, you can rest and relax in comfort.
Turn on Alerts
Most airlines and airports offer apps that allow you to track your flight information. You need to ensure your alerts and notifications are turned on so you can stay on top of any changes to your trip. Whether it’s a delay, gate change, or cancellation, receiving real-time updates can help you avoid unnecessary stress at the airport. Alerts also ensure you don’t miss important notifications, like boarding times or updated travel requirements. It’s an easy step that helps keep your travel smooth and hassle-free.
Traveling doesn’t have to be stressful if you know the right tricks. By planning and adopting these practical tips of mine, you can easily navigate airports.Being prepared and organized can make a difference in your travel experience. Happy travels!
