“What’s your diet?” Shaquille O’Neal puts Tom Brady on the spot
Two all-time greats and one honest question, plus a surprising answer about discipline and what separates legends.
There’s something really satisfying about watching one legend admit he’s curious about another. Not in a defensive or competitive way, but a genuinely curious one. That’s exactly what happened when NBA star Shaquille O’Neal sat across from NFL legend Tom Brady for an interview on his podcast, The Big Podcast with Shaq, and decided to ask a question plenty of athletes and regular guys have probably wondered about. And Brady didn’t sugarcoat it.
The story
Before dropping the question, Shaq begins, “Let me tell you a story first. I’ve been skinny Shaq, medium Shaq, fat Shaq. You’ve been Tom your whole life. What is your diet? And how did you discipline yourself?”
Brady answers in a straightforward way, saying, “I would say like I always ate… I was pretty health conscious when I came into the league in 2000,” he explains. “I was pretty health-conscious. I started getting involved in like… let’s say even vitamins, multivitamins, fish oils, you know, all that stuff in the year 2000, and I didn’t miss a day. Swear to God, didn’t miss a day.” That’s Brady in a nutshell. Consistency over flash.
He continues, explaining that by around 2003, he had really leaned into it. At that point, Adam Lefkoe, the primary co-host, jokes, “Shaq’s life is a cheat day.” The room cracks up. Brady even teases, “He’s like, ‘Hey, I was healthy on Tuesday.’”
Shaq fires back with total honesty saying, “I like burgers, though, Tom. I like burgers and club sandwiches.”
And Brady, to his credit, doesn’t pretend he’s immune. “And I like, I do too. But I just, like I said, I think I was born with the ability to say no, where I don’t think some other people were born with that ability.”
Then he flips it. “It’s just like you’re born 7 foot two, 7 foot one. I was never going to be born that tall. So it was kind of a blessing for me, I guess.”
In other words, discipline was his superpower. Size was Shaq’s. Shaq caps the exchange with one last punchline, “But I want to [look] like you.” And just like that, two champions reduce the GOAT debate to burgers and vitamins.
Reactions
The internet, of course, had its thoughts. One commenter summed up the dynamic perfectly, saying, “Shaq mentality and Tom Brady mentality are the difference between being one of the greatest and being the greatest.” It’s a bold take, but it reflects what a lot of fans were thinking. Shaq dominated with sheer physical gifts. Brady squeezed every ounce out of preparation and routine. Different paths, same rare air.
Another popular comment read, “They didn’t even let him get to explain his diet” which is fair, because we all did want to hear that part too, right?! Brady barely got past fish oil and multivitamins before the conversation turned into a roast session.
Of course, the line that stole the show? “‘But I like burgers Tom…’” That one kept popping up because it’s relatable. Most guys watching probably felt that in their soul.
Then there was this perspective, “Shaq was naturally gifted. Tom worked hard on and off the field by staying disciplined. This was a perfect example.” That comment hits at the heart of the exchange. Shaq doesn’t deny his talent. Brady doesn’t deny his structure. They’re almost acknowledging their differences in real time.
Why this matters
When two athletes of this caliber talk, it’s never just small talk. Shaq is a four-time NBA champion and one of the most unstoppable forces basketball has ever seen. Brady is a seven-time Super Bowl champion who played into his mid-40s at an elite level.
They both reached the mountaintop. But they took different roads. Shaq’s career was built on rare, generational physical dominance. Brady’s was built on longevity, routine, and what he describes as the ability to say no. “Saying no” is actually something people report improves their daily lives.
We see this concept come up frequently with not just athletes but also celebrities. Even Academy Award winner Matt Damon talks about the discipline it takes to stay fit. Sometimes the difference between “skinny Shaq, medium Shaq, fat Shaq” and “Tom your whole life” is the ability to say no even when there’s a burger on the table.
And that’s the real takeaway. There isn’t just one blueprint for greatness. Most of us fall somewhere in between, trying to balance the burger with the discipline.
