Being a father is often seen as one of the most challenging yet fulfilling roles a man can take on. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to shape a child’s life. However, the idea of being a ‘good parent’ is evolving. Instead of rigid roles, many parents are now choosing a more thoughtful approach to raising their kids. Recently, actor Chris Hemsworth shared his insights on what it means to be a good dad, and his views might surprise you.

Chris Hemsworth is best known for playing Thor, the powerful God of Thunder, in the popular Marvel movies. For over a decade, he has starred in popular films like Star Trek, Snow White and the Huntsman, and Men in Black, among others. Chris is now preparing for several upcoming releases, including a heist movie titled Crime 101, which will hit theaters on February 13, 2026. Fans are also looking forward to seeing him again in Avengers: Doomsday and in the next part of Extraction.

Chris is married to Spanish model and actress Elsa Pataky, and they have three children together. He has openly discussed his health and his commitment to being a good father over the years.

What makes a good dad

Recently, actor Chris Hemsworth shared his thoughts on fatherhood during an appearance on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast. When Shetty asked, “What do you believe makes a good dad?”, Hemsworth emphasised the importance of being a role model for them. He believes that a good father is “someone who truly embodies the things they’re trying to bestow upon you.”

True authority in parenting comes from being the person you want your children to become. If you want them to be kind, they have to see you being kind when you think no one is watching. Hemsworth explained, “Someone who truly represents those virtues that they’re trying to teach you. Rather than you talking about it, their behavior represents that. And that’s been my dad. His actions spoke a lot louder than his words.”

It’s easy to talk about being a good parent, but it’s much harder to show it through daily behavior. Hemsworth noted that his own father didn’t rely on “poetic one-liners” to get a point across. Instead, he taught important lessons through his everyday actions; the way he treated others and held himself with integrity and kindness. “The way he walked into a room and the way he treated people, the way he behaved and held himself and took care of people and was compassionate”, he added.

For Hemsworth, the standard for a father is to be “true to his word and honest, and still is and holds a beautiful amount of integrity and love.” He summarized the role as “someone who models their behavior honestly.”

This approach to parenting is something other well-known fathers have discussed. Lately, Nick Jonas talked about raising a daughter in a multicultural family, highlighting the effort it takes to stay connected to various traditions. Matthew McConaughey has also discussed his parenting style, emphasizing that being a good father requires being physically present and staying active in his children’s daily lives.

Reactions

The internet had plenty to say about Hemsworth’s approach. One person wrote: “I can’t unsee Thor whenever this guy speaks.” It is a testament to how much people admire his work that they associate his real-life strength with the character he plays on screen. Another person appreciated him for who he is beyond an actor: “The definition of a good man, and eventually, a good father.”

The qualities that make someone admirable are often the same qualities that make them a good parent. Another person agreed with the idea that perfection isn’t the goal, saying, “So much truth in this. Being a good father isn’t about getting everything right; it’s about presence, integrity, and being someone your kids feel safe with.” Reliability is often more important than being right. A child who feels safe with their father has the freedom to grow and make mistakes. That safety comes from knowing the father is a man of his word.

One person shared their thoughts on what it means to be a good dad: “Every dad has their own idea of what makes a good dad. Be present, show up, make an effort, pay attention, listen twice, talk once.” Parenting can often feel overwhelming with all the books and theories out there, but at its heart, it’s really about a few simple things. The most challenging yet rewarding part of being a parent is just being there for your kids and listening to them.

Why this matters

Children learn through observation. Long before they can process anything else, they are watching how their parents handle daily habits, how they talk to others, and how they manage their emotions. These observations shape how a child understands respect and empathy. Parents who practice honesty and responsibility create a standard that children naturally copy. Because children are prone to mimicking the patterns they see at home, a parent’s actual behavior is the most influential factor in how a child’s character develops over time.

Additionally, reliability is what builds a sense of security. When a father follows through on a promise, he teaches his child that his word has value. This consistency helps a child understand accountability and respect for others. If a parent says one thing but does another, it leads to confusion and makes it much harder for a child to value the guidance they are given. By modeling strong morals in everyday life, fathers help their kids learn self-discipline and how to make ethical decisions as they grow up.

Modern fatherhood requires active participation in the small, mundane parts of life. Being present for daily routines and simple conversations is what actually builds a relationship. Children benefit when fathers engage in caregiving and create an environment where kids can speak their minds without hesitation. This kind of involvement helps children grow in their confidence and communication skills. In the end, the time fathers spend with their kids fosters healthier family bonds that can last as children grow up.
