Tom Cruise shares how writing down goals, accepting fear, and taking small steps helped him tackle challenges throughout his career.

Many people believe that bravery is something you’re born with. They think it’s a special quality that only certain people have. When we see someone taking big risks, we often think they must not feel fear like the rest of us do. But that’s not true. Being brave doesn’t mean you don’t feel scared. It simply means you know how to deal with that fear. Whether it’s quitting a job or moving to a new place, everyone struggles with a mental block at times. Recently, Tom Cruise shared how he handles this fear, and his approach provides a helpful way to manage the uncertainty that can keep many of us from moving forward.

What happened

At the premiere for his movie, Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning, an interviewer asked Cruise for advice for people who struggle to be brave. He said the first step is to get your goals out of your head and onto paper. “You just have to write down your dream, and then write down a list of how you accomplish that”, he added. By identifying the skills he needs to learn, he works toward his goals.

Cruise believes that fear shouldn’t hold you back. He said, “I don’t just sit there and worry about it. I just start doing it. And don’t be so worried if you’re afraid.” For Cruise, fear is just a part of the journey; it’s the unknown. He explained, “Just keep working through it. Really, the fear you feel is the unknown. It’s what you don’t know.”

He also believes in learning through taking action, as he shares, “And just kind of recognize that, that it’s okay not to know. And work towards a knowingness of things. And the only way to do it is not to be in your head on it, but just to start looking, go out, and start doing it. One step at a time.”

Many men today feel stuck in life, afraid to take the next step because of the uncertainty of what could happen. Cruise follows a simple approach to tackle challenges. “When I’m training people, or I’m training myself, I’m always thinking, I’m going to learn how to crawl before I walk. Walk before I jog. Jog before I run. Run before I sprint. And then I sprint out of a plane or off a cliff before I do that. So, that’s what I do”, he added. That is his way of pushing through fears.

The movie, Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning, is directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The movie stars Tom Cruise in a final portrayal of Ethan Hunt. Given the scale of the action, it became one of the year’s most talked-about films and wrapped up a long story that fans had been following for years.

Reactions

Many people were pleasantly surprised by how practical his advice turned out to be. One person mentioned, “He is so charismatic, kind, and a brilliant actor.” Beyond his movie-star persona, his openness about facing his own fears makes his message relatable to anyone going through a similar phase in life.

Another person pointed out the comfort that comes from taking action: “Great advice on anything you do in life!! I always feel and sleep better when I know that I’ve done everything I can that day to work towards my goals.” Another fan appreciated the advice on pushing yourself to reach goals: “Truly inspiring, always pushing yourself to the next best ability.”

For those dealing with ongoing stress, the advice offered a way to break through the confusion. A commenter shared, “As someone who has developed very bad anxiety in later life, I find this man’s insights into confronting fear inspirational.” Breaking a problem down into things a person can learn and do provides a clear path forward without waiting to feel better first.

Why this matters

Fear often comes from facing the unknown. Many people shy away from new challenges because the uncertainty can feel threatening to their safety or status. It’s normal to feel nervous when starting something new, but it doesn’t mean you’re not capable. A lot of our struggle comes from sitting and thinking too much about the problem. As soon as we start gathering information and understanding how things work, that tension begins to fade.

Building confidence to achieve those goals comes from taking small steps. It’s not something you wait for. Instead, it grows as you start to take action. By breaking a challenge down into small, manageable tasks, you lessen the chances of feeling anxious. By the time you are ready to “run,” it doesn’t feel like a huge leap because you have already spent so much time mastering the walking and jogging phases.

Many people get stuck in the planning phase, waiting for the fear to go away, but it never does. Moving forward gives you real experience to understand what works. Remember, fear is just about the unknown, and we shouldn’t let it stop us from creating the lives we want. So rather than waiting for the “right time”, start working on your goals today, one step at a time!
