Boyfriend’s “cute” nickname started as a mean joke behind his back—funny or “mean girl” move?

He asked Reddit if he was wrong to want to change his nickname after the truth came out.

Pet names are those cute little nicknames that people often use for their partners to express love and affection. While joking around in a relationship can be fun, it can become a problem if you don’t realize you’re the punchline of a joke. This is what happened to one guy who shared his experience on Reddit. He thought his favorite pet name was endearing, only to find out it was part of a joke about him that his girlfriend and friends had been laughing about all along.

A 30-year-old man shared a concern that had been bothering him for a while. His girlfriend, who is 28 and has been with him for just over a year, had been calling him “museum” for quite some time, and even on a Christmas mug she bought for him. At first, he found it quirky and a bit charming, even when her friends picked it up and started using it too. He assumed there must be a sweet story behind it that he just hadn’t heard yet.

Everything changed at a birthday party when his girlfriend confessed that “museum” started as a joke among her friends, who described him as having “museum energy.” This meant he was quiet, pleasant, and good-looking, but maybe not very exciting. Feeling uncomfortable, he told her that he didn’t want to be called that nickname anymore. However, she insisted that he was misunderstanding it and that it was now meant affectionately. Confused and upset, he decided to ask others if he was wrong for wanting the nickname to stop and if he should no longer hear it at all.

Most people online seemed to support the man

One person wrote, “If it were switched up, she’d be furious”, which makes a lot of sense. If he had introduced her to his friends using a nickname that made her sound just “pretty but forgettable,” the response would probably be much different.

Another person added, “They’ve basically been disrespecting you right in front of your face – that’s some mean girl energy.” This is a tough thing to deal with. It wasn’t a joke between strangers; it was a joke being used on him by people he was actively spending time with, while he had no idea. Someone else wrote, “That’s a mean nickname. Don’t let them gaslight you; you have every right to be upset.”

However, not everyone felt sympathy for him. One commenter said, “Get over it. It’s how everyone gets a nickname. You don’t get to pick it.” Nicknames often come from shared experiences or inside jokes. But there’s a difference between a nickname that’s born from affection and one that feels like a judgment about who someone is.

Many people suggested that the man should consider leaving the relationship, arguing that his girlfriend was being mean.

Respecting your partner

How we treat our partners can significantly affect our relationship. It doesn’t always have to be a big argument or fight. Sometimes, it’s about the little things, like the way we speak to each other, a joke that might go too far, or a comment that leaves someone feeling left out. These experiences can shape how both partners feel and how others see the relationship.

In a healthy relationship, there’s often an unspoken understanding that you’re both on the same side when you’re in front of others, even if you might have some issues privately. This doesn’t mean pretending everything is perfect or not being playful with each other. It means valuing your partner’s feelings and not making jokes at their expense. If someone says something unkind about your partner, it’s important to stand up for them rather than make it part of a joke later.

Before getting serious in a relationship, it’s a good idea to talk about what’s important to both of you. This way, you can understand each other’s boundaries and deal-breakers before any issues arise.

The takeaway

This situation serves as a valuable lesson that what we intend to communicate and how it actually comes across can be very different. Sometimes, something that starts as a joke can end up feeling hurtful, and just because things turn out okay later doesn’t mean you ignore the initial feelings. He is justified in wanting a nickname that feels respectful and kind, and the girlfriend isn’t at fault for letting something that was mean evolve into something meaningful.
