Matt Damon delivers hilarious Mother’s Day message on SNL—and fans can’t stop talking about it
The actor’s third time hosting brought a Mother’s Day video message so good that fans are asking why SNL hasn’t clipped it yet.
Mother’s Day is often a time for rushing to buy flowers and sharing sweet posts online, but Saturday Night Live (SNL) always knows how to make fun of the hectic atmosphere. This year, everything lined up perfectly as Matt Damon returned to the iconic SNL stage and shared a special message for mothers. The show was filled with laughs and excitement, particularly as it approached this special holiday.
Damon was at the studio to promote his upcoming movie, “The Odyssey,” directed by Christopher Nolan. Damon shared that this was his third time hosting SNL, jokingly saying that the number felt low after about 30 years in the industry. He also cleverly teased that “The Odyssey” would be in theaters “not this weekend, not next weekend, but nine weekends from now. Mid-July, baby.”
Then the monologue took a fun twist when Damon mentioned that they usually bring in the mothers of the cast members for a special tribute, but Spirit Airlines had shut down, so that plan was canceled. This led to a funny back-and-forth with a fan in the audience who seemed more interested in bringing comedian and actor Marcello Hernandez’s mother. But Damon had to tell him that they had to move on with the show.
The “Mother’s Day” monologue
He moved on with the show, understanding that many people might have forgotten to buy a Mother’s Day gift, and Damon had a message prepared for them. “I got you guys covered. Just send her this”, he said. Damon appeared in a flower-bordered frame on screen, delivering a personalized video message in which he flattered moms, pretending to be surprised by how youthful they looked. He said, “But wait, I’m confused. Your kid asked me to make a video for their mom, but you’re their sister, right?” He casually joked, claiming he’d have guessed they were only 28 or 29. He then shared how old he is, saying, “Old enough to know what I’m doing, young enough to do it well. Listen, I gotta go, but you deserve a night out.”
Damon also cleverly slipped in the movie promotion one last time, saying, “You tell your partner to take you out on a date… There’s a movie I think you’re really gonna like.” Damon encouraged the audience to flip the screen and send the message to their mothers.
The segment ended with a fun surprise when Marcello’s actual mother showed up in the audience, surprising everyone.
The internet quickly reacted to this SNL episode featuring Matt Damon. One viewer commented, “Matt Damon oozes such calm and grace, like everything will be ok.” Many others shared a similar sentiment, saying that when Matt is the host, the show just gets even better. One fan said, “Everything he’s in is better”.
In particular, this Mother’s Day clip caught people’s attention, with many wondering why SNL hadn’t made it more widely available. One viewer said, “SNL really needs to clip that Mom Day message for us.” Many people may have found themselves without a plan for Mother’s Day. A well-made video of a famous actor giving a shout-out to someone’s mom is a funny and thoughtful alternative to a last-minute grocery store card and a random gift.
People also appreciated the clever callbacks in the episode. One person wrote, “The 9 weekends from now plug and callback was brilliant.” All the buzz around this episode aligns perfectly with the upcoming release of Damon’s new movie, “The Odyssey“, for which Damon had to undergo a dramatic body transformation. This film is based on Homer’s ancient Greek story about Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and follows his long and challenging journey home after the Trojan War, where he tries to reunite with his wife, Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.
Damon’s appearance on the show marks the start of his movie’s promotion. Since the film is set to hit theaters in mid-July, keeping an eye on the “nine weekends” he mentioned could be exciting!
