Kevin Hart on the biggest fashion mistakes men make — and here’s my take on what to do instead

The comedian breaks down modern men’s style, including where things often fall short.

Kevin Hart has built a public image around control. He has sharp comedy, sharp business moves, and, increasingly, sharp personal style. That same energy came through when he was asked about men’s fashion. His answer was simple, but useful when it comes to the biggest fashion mistake men make.

Men’s biggest style mistake according to Kevin Hart

In a recent interview on Call Her Daddy, Alex Cooper eventually asked Hart “How would you describe your personal style?” Hart answered, “classy, laid-back, tailored, mature.” That baseline set up the rest of the conversation as he seemed to stay controlled and consistent in his opinion. Cooper then pivoted directly into the headline-making question:

“What do you think is the biggest fashion mistake that men make?”

“Trying to do too much.” Hart responded. He pointed to trend-chasing as the main issue, saying men often end up “trying to dress towards a trend and not towards like where you are.”

For Hart, the mistake isn’t caring about style. It’s when the effort becomes obvious, or when the outfit starts to feel like it’s trying harder than the person wearing it. He tied that back to his own approach:

“I think I do a very good job of staying in what I would consider to be my lane,” he said. “I don’t do too much. I’m not trying to walk the runway… I like being clean-cut… polished, poised, but at the same time comfortable… like a shoe” he joked.

Cooper followed up by asking if his wife has ever vetoed him from wearing anything. Hart admitted she has, but usually only when he pushes too far with color. He described showing up in something like an “electric blue” V-neck and immediately being told to “take it off,” which he took as a fair call.

Practice restraint, not playing it safe

A lot of men make style harder than it needs to be by starting with trends rather than fit, proportion, color, and context. They see a bold jacket, an oversized silhouette, loud sneakers, or a bright color online and try to copy the look without asking whether it fits their body, lifestyle, or personality. Hart’s style represents a more useful approach that resembles Stanley Tucci’s timeless style.

The easiest way to recreate Hart’s style is to keep the base simple. Neutral colors, good tailoring, and controlled layers do most of the work. A black tee under a fitted jacket, a monochrome set, or a clean button-down with tapered pants can look intentional without looking forced. The goal is to look put together without making every item compete for attention.

Color is where Hart’s advice becomes especially practical. Bright pieces can work, but they need restraint. If the color is the statement, the rest of the outfit should be quiet. If the fit is sharp, the color does not have to shout.

That doesn’t mean men should dress boringly. It means the best-dressed men usually know when to stop. They understand fit, keep the colors controlled, and choose one focal point instead of five, which is a style mistake many make.
