The British actor opened up about career pressure, the reality of highs and lows, and why becoming a father changed the way he thinks about success entirely.

Not many celebrities are open about the parts of their careers that didn’t go as planned. We often hear polished stories about how they become who they are and achieve success, or how they learn important lessons from their failures. However, raw, honest stories about their journeys are much less common to hear. Recently, actor Theo James opened up about how he navigated the ups and downs of his life, and his story offers a valuable lesson.

Theo James, best known for his role in The Divergent Series, will soon be seen in “Fuze,” a crime thriller that will be released in theaters nationwide on April 24. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Sam Worthington. The story revolves around the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb at a busy construction site in London, causing panic as military and police rush to evacuate the area before time runs out.

The interview

James recently appeared on Josh Smith’s Great Chat Show, where he talked about his experiences as an actor and the challenges that come with the job. Smith asked him whether there was something he’d once seen as a failure that ended up making him who he is today.

James explained that being an actor is like riding a roller coaster, with lots of ups and downs. “And I think when you first start doing it, you assume or you have pressure on yourself that it’s just going to be kind of always up”, he added.

That’s something a lot of people won’t say out loud, especially once they’ve reached a certain level in their career. There’s an unspoken rule in most industries that successful people are supposed to project confidence, as if they always knew where they were headed. James admitted to feeling a lot of pressure in the beginning, but also talked about a turning point in his life when he learned to loosen up and not let that pressure affect him so much.

Becoming a father significantly changed his perspective. He told Smith, “I chilled out kind of marketkedly cuz I finally realized that it doesn’t really matter.” The noise and stress of the entertainment industry no longer bothered him as much. “I finally realized that it doesn’t really matter. None of this matters,” he said. He explained that as long as his family is happy and they live a good life, that is all that matters most to him. Interestingly, once he stopped stressing over every career-related decision, he found life became much easier and more enjoyable.

The interview sparked a lot of discussion among viewers

Many of the viewers found his honesty refreshing. One person wrote, “I could listen to this man talking for hours. He’s just so deep, so intuitive and so real.”

Another viewer noted: “Something I really enjoy about Theo’s interviews is the way he answers questions with either a really dark, playful humor or with a deeply thoughtful perspective.” James doesn’t take Hollywood’s prestige seriously, which allows him to be honest about the darker, more frustrating parts of the job without sounding ungrateful.

In addition to the valuable advice he offers, his down-to-earth personality helps people picture him in memorable roles. One fan said, “I can definitely see Theo playing George Michael.” Another viewer thanked the host for letting Theo share his thoughts, saying, “What an eloquent man Theo is! Thank you for this fantastic interview, Josh.”

Feeling uncertain doesn’t mean you’re failing

When we start our careers, we often expect to climb straight to the top, but that’s not how it usually works. We see people getting promotions and achieving success, and start comparing ourselves to them without realizing that everyone’s journey is different. So, when things don’t go as planned, our first thought is often that we’ve made a mistake.

Ups and downs are a normal part of any career, and that’s not just something newcomers go through. Everyone, from actors to corporate workers and other professionals, hits a point where they’re unsure about what comes next. Industries change, situations evolve, but dealing with uncertainty is something everyone experiences. This is how we grow and learn in our jobs.

If you ever feel lost or unsure about your next steps, take a moment to pause. Give yourself some time to think things through and try to take action without adding too much stress. Sometimes, it’s easier to tackle life’s challenges if you stay calm and collected. And don’t hesitate to start again if things aren’t working out the way you planned!
