Sometimes the most meaningful version of a perfect day is far simpler than people expect.

We spend so much time running around trying to build this picture-perfect life, thinking happiness means constantly doing things, going places, or staying busy. You get trapped in this endless cycle of checking off tasks, answering text messages, and trying to keep everyone around you happy. It is easy to think that Hollywood stars, with all their money and access, want even crazier, more extravagant experiences to feel fulfilled. However, a recent podcast clip shows that even famous people like Paul Rudd are looking for the same simple joys as the rest of us.

Paul Rudd, who was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2021, recently shared his idea of the perfect day on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast. He admitted that he does not want to do anything or see anyone. “My perfect day is I have no responsibility”, Rudd said. He envisions spending time in a cold, dark room and not talking to anyone. Alternatively, he also mentioned that he could be on a sunny beach, just gazing at the water. That’s what would make him happiest.

Considering his job involves constantly meeting people, smiling for cameras, and attending numerous events, it’s surprising to hear him describe a day so quiet and solitary. While many might think someone in his position would want to be celebrated, Paul Rudd’s ultimate fantasy is simply complete silence, no expectations, and a total break from human interaction.

We’re all running on empty

I’ve thought about what my perfect day looks like more than I care to admit. And it almost never involves doing something impressive. It’s usually something embarrassingly small: waking up without the jarring sound of an alarm, making coffee at my own pace, finding a quiet spot to sit, and enjoying a few hours where I don’t have to answer to anyone.

When people talk about resting, they usually mention activities like hiking, traveling, pursuing hobbies, or socializing over brunches. This idea of “recharging” can seem appealing, especially in social media posts. But the kind of rest I truly need is more like what Rudd described: a state of almost complete stillness. A cool, quiet room, without the urgency of work emails or notifications waiting for me.

I think many people can relate to this feeling. Most of us are so busy that we don’t often find time to unwind. Even when we’re not at work, our minds are often still buzzing with thoughts about tasks needed to be done. It has become hard for us to enjoy a time when our brains aren’t thinking about anything work-related. We’ve created lives where being busy is the norm, and anything less can make you feel like you’re falling behind.

So, when I heard Paul Rudd talk about his idea of a perfect day, it made me think he has it right. We’re all trying to be available to others, responding quickly to messages and showing up for events even if we don’t want to. It’s refreshing to consider that someone who seems to have everything might just want a moment of quiet, away from responsibilities.

I’ve started paying more attention to honesty in my own life, trying to figure out what I really need on a day off versus what I think I should want. I’ve filled my weekends with activities, thinking they would help me recharge, only to feel more exhausted by Monday. On the other hand, I’ve experienced laid-back Sundays with no plans and minimal social interaction, and I’ve felt refreshed in a way I couldn’t otherwise.

The perfect day can look different for everyone. However, I believe many people secretly prefer a quieter day than what their calendars might suggest. It can be a bit more solitary and less focused on productivity. Maybe it’s a beach where you can gaze at the water and let your mind wander, or maybe it’s simply a room where no one expects anything from you for a while. There’s no need to feel embarrassed about wanting that. It’s simply about understanding what you need to feel relaxed and happy.
