Instead of promoting his new movie, Gosling was more concerned about the safety of a journalist who was trying to interview in the middle of the road.

In many professional media environments, everything is designed to run smoothly and predictably. Every little detail is taken care of to ensure that the promotion of a project goes off without a hitch, but sometimes, things may not go as planned. That’s what happened when Ryan Gosling sat down for an interview to promote his upcoming movie with journalist Jake Hamilton, only to discover that Hamilton was literally stranded in the middle of the Arizona desert.

Ryan Gosling’s upcoming movie, Project Hail Mary, is based on a popular novel by Andy Weir. In the film, Gosling plays a science teacher, “Ryland Grace”, who finds himself on a spaceship, with no memory of how he arrived there. The film also stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung, and is set to release on March 20, 2026.

The interview

Jake Hamilton, a seasoned entertainment reporter, intended to conduct an interview from the comfort of a studio or home office. Instead, he found himself appearing on Gosling’s screen from the side of a highway. Hamilton later shared the video with a caption: “That moment you have to interview Ryan Gosling…but your tour bus broke down in the middle of the desert.” Instead of calling it quits, he stood in the dirt, held up his phone, and tried to do his job.

When the video call started, Gosling quickly noticed the unusual background behind Hamilton and joked, “Are you in a volcano?” Once he realized the reporter was actually stranded, he looked surprised. “There’s like four cars on a trailer just went by behind you. Just get one of those,” Gosling joked, noting that Hamilton looked like he was filming a high-stakes stunt for a Mission Impossible sequel.

Hamilton tried to be a professional and started asking questions, but Gosling wouldn’t have it. He paused the interview to check on Hamilton’s well-being. “Do you have help on the way? Hold on. Let’s just, first things first. Do you have water?” He kept asking questions until he knew everyone was safe. “Are you staying hydrated? Are you sure? And you’re sure you have enough water for everyone? Because that could get ugly”, Gosling further asked.

Gosling told Hamilton to “start squirreling” away their supplies, prompting him to say: “ABS (Always Be Squirreling).” The moment surprised Gosling even more when Hamilton’s girlfriend, Iris, who was holding the phone, appeared on screen. He called her the “MVP” of the whole situation. Hamilton told Gosling, “We’ve got about half a bag of gummy worms. And a can-do attitude, much like Grace does in the film.”

He even worried about the temperature dropping, asking if they had blankets, proving he was way more concerned about their safety than talking about his own film. Gosling further said, “I definitely want to hear that you got out of this”.

Later, Eva Mendes, a former American actress, reshared the interview and asked if Hamilton and Iris made it back, to which he responded, “Iris and I made it back! Tell Ryan we’re safe. Also, thank you for checking.”

Reactions

As the video quickly went viral, some fans were impressed by the professionalism maintained despite the situation. One viewer noted, “The best part of this is Jake still trying to ask valid questions.” Maintaining a professional image while your transportation is being fixed in the background shows a level of dedication that’s hard to find.

The humor in their exchange also entertained many people watching the clip. Another viewer said, “This is too good! ABS (Always Be Squirreling) will become part of my vocabulary immediately.” Gosling used the term to describe the act of hoarding and rationing supplies like water or food, much like a squirrel preparing for winter.

Many loved the natural interaction between the two, instead of a formal conversation about the project itself. Another fan wrote, “One of the best interviews I’ve seen in quite a while. Almost felt like I was watching an actual tv show between two characters.” People also admired Hamilton’s determination to do his job despite the challenging situation he was in. One viewer wrote, “Gotta respect the dedication to the grind.”

Gosling’s focus on the crew’s safety also earned him a lot of admiration. A commenter noted, “Ryan is so selfless, he knows it’s wrong to be promoting a film when the interviewer is clearly in a distress situation. What a real hero, a real human being being!”

Why this matters

It is interesting how a basic technical failure can completely derail a professional media setup. This exchange, which was supposed to be about Gosling’s latest project, took an unexpected turn because of a unique situation the reporter was facing. This shows that celebrities are just like us; they have emotions and can react compassionately, even while they’re busy promoting their work.

Audience expectations are also changing. Many viewers are growing weary of perfectly rehearsed interviews and are instead drawn to spontaneous, real conversations. While promotional talks can be expected, with audiences knowing what the actor will say, they rarely get to witness their favorite stars responding to unexpected challenges in a relatable way.

At the end of the day, people are more drawn to authentic experiences from their favorite celebrities. Sometimes, the best interview isn’t just about a movie; it’s really about two people connecting with kindness and understanding.
