Weeks on crutches and grounded flights didn’t stop the broadcaster from turning a painful fall into a political punchline.

Piers Morgan has never been one to suffer in silence, and he certainly wasn’t going to start now. The controversial British broadcaster recently found himself in a hospital bed, but that didn’t stop him from breaking his own news in the most dramatic fashion possible.

Posting a selfie that showed him connected to an IV and oxygen. Morgan turned a painful injury into a viral moment with a caption that surprised everyone. He also shared an image of an X-ray post his fall.

The story

Morgan shared a humorous, detailed post about a rather unfortunate incident that marked the beginning of his year. He described the event as if it were a news report, breaking down the accident into ten steps on his Instagram post.

He clarified that the accident wasn’t due to any wild or risky behavior; instead, he “tripped on a small step.” To make it worse, he noted it happened “inside a London hotel restaurant,” adding that eye-roll emoji because it may have happened in a room full of people. When describing his fall, he didn’t hold back and said he “fell like a sack of spuds (potato).”

Unfortunately, the impact of the fall was much more serious than the fall itself. He ended up with a “fractured neck of femur,” which is a fancy way of saying he broke his hip. The injury was serious enough that he said, “So badly I needed a new hip”. Now, Morgan finds himself “recovering in hospital” and facing a long recovery ahead.

He explained that he’ll be on “crutches for 6 weeks,” which is already inconvenient, and he can’t fly long distances. “No long-haul flying for 12 weeks”, he added. This means he’s grounded for several months. Despite the pain and disruptions to his plans, he maintained his sense of humor, sarcastically saying that his “New Year off to a cracking start!” But the post surprised everyone when he made his last point, declaring, “I blame Donald Trump.”

Public reactions

Piers Morgan tends to attract a very specific type of follower: people who either love to hate him or love to banter with him. The comments section quickly filled up with well-wishes, political jokes, and even savage burns.

Some followers took the opportunity to hit him where it hurts: his sports fandom. One user reminded him of recent disappointments in the cricket world, commenting: “Just in case there was any memory loss suffered in the fall… England lost the Ashes.”

Some people choose to make light of the dullness that often comes with being in the hospital and recovering from an illness. One person joked that a visit from a certain politician could be the best remedy for insomnia. “I’ve arranged for the PM to pay a visit bedside, in case you’re having any trouble getting off to sleep”, they added.

Then came the age-related jabs. In the UK, when someone says that an elderly person “had a fall,” it often hints at something more serious. His followers quickly picked up on this and made comments about it. One person wrote: “Sorry to say those dreaded words, but Piers had a fall. Officially old.”

However, amidst the roasting, there were some genuine, albeit backhanded, compliments. One person acknowledged that despite the drama, he is still a major voice in media, saying: “Get well soon, Piers Morgan… you are still one of the most important humans that existed last two years even though you suffer from strange moral quandaries.”

And finally, someone pointed out how exaggerated the post was. It wouldn’t be Piers if there weren’t some drama involved. As one follower summed it up, “Always have to be so dramatic. Hoping you have a speedy recovery!”

Why this matters

While a celebrity breaking a hip is usually just tabloid fodder, the “I blame Donald Trump” punchline elevates this story because of the long, complicated relationship between the two men. They started with a genuine friendship when Morgan won The Celebrity Apprentice in 2008, where Trump frequently praised him as evil yet very smart. Morgan reciprocated his appreciation in the same way when he sent a letter to Trump after he became the president. However, their friendship soured into a feud after the Capitol riots on January 6th, when Morgan publicly criticized Trump.

Last month, Morgan called out Trump again when he made insensitive comments about the recent deaths of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

Now, by jokingly blaming Trump for his injury, Morgan cleverly plays with the trend of blaming the current president for various issues. This not only takes a serious moment and adds humor, but also draws attention to their past. Even from the hospital, Morgan keeps himself in the news, showing he knows how to keep the spotlight on himself.
